So after how many years I am finally out of debt. On March 15 I paid of my truck and I have no more debt. No more debt. Yeah baby. Eat this lenders. So what next, well I am going to get some stuff for my kayak, maybe replace my computer. And also save enough money to not worry if I lose or quit my job. The main thing that is holding my back in that area is that when I run I can't make it a mile before my right leg tightens up on the outside of my calf. Any thoughts? I would also like to get Lasik surgery so I can have 2 good eyes instead of one.

Been a while

For those of you who follow, sorry it has been a while. Just to catch you up on some things, I got my college loan paid off so now the only thing I have left to pay off is my car loan and that should be finished in a few months. Getting out of debt has been a very high goal of mine since I realized that life would have been a lot different if I had paid off my loans when I had lost my job. When I am out of debt, who knows what the future holds.

In other news I haven't really committed to an institutional church but I have been hanging out with people who want to do a house church. The problem is that I don't want to limit my church to just that. In Rochester, there was so much. There was LaBri, there was new church plants, there was my movie night. They were not in the same institution, but for once I was being part of the Church not a church.

I also got to go camping. Unfortunatly it is not hiking with everything on your back, but I did finally get to use my tent and tried out my camping stove. My next goal is to get a kayak and go camping.

Well that is it for now. I will try to keep this more updated.

Hey

Anybody still reading this? So at least I got my tent out for the first time since I bought one year ago. Also spent about 250$ to finish out my camping equipment so I should not have to buy anymore. All I need now is the kayak and I think I am set.

Saw the Pirates of the Caribbean. Nothing really suprising but very entertaining. It is like the first movie except bigger in alomst every way even to the point that the next movie is just a continuation of the story. Johnny Depp is again in fine standard form. He doesn't give us anymore depth into the character, but to know that Jack Sparrow has anymore depth would ruin him. The mythology of the sea is in much more of the story this time around with Davy Jones. Orlando Bloom I am sure is just as dreamy to girls in this movie but unfortunatly Keira Knightly's role is somewhat diminished until the end. Is it better than the first one? It is hard to say because it is just one half of the whole movie and we are left hanging and have to wait till next May. But so far I would have to say yes. Enough where I may have to buy the whole trilogy, in box set of course. And of course the big flat panel TV to watch it on.

Also I bought a book I am excited to get into. Read about it in my church blog. But if you can't control yourselft, taste this. The Vocie

So long

Thought for the day

Hatred doesn't deter immorality

Following Jesus in business

I have been thinking lately about "What would Jesus do in industry". In that I am sure that if Jesus was in my shoes, he would serve his boss who in turn serves the board. But also he would also do what is best for all the people that is affected by his decision. I don't think he would do something just to make a dollar.

Now this all sounds easy, but in real life it is not. As someone who looks at new technology in the ethanol business and also somebody who has to deal with people in that could get fired, though not by me, I find a lot of these question come up. For example, I might find a new technology that might bet better for the environment and help support people locally who aren't above the middle class. Now this technology might be more expensive than one that is not as good for the environment and put more money in the rich.

And this isn't fully my decision. But I do sway the decision. And as I serve my employer, I have to be fiscally responsible. It is almost I am serving two masters but than again Jesus says I am to serve my employer as well.

So that is my moral quandry and dilemma. Also, while I don't have a family yet, I am faced with the theoretical dilemma of balancing family and work.

In other news I have been blessed by the visitation of my friends Jake and Joy. Had a good two days though interrupted briefly by work. I also came to the realization that next time I have friends over, I need to consider Mammoth Cave as a place to take them. And that an inflatable bed is not as good as a real mattress and boxspring.

Till next time, link of the day Reclaim The Music

More things

For those of you that follow my blog, sorry for the delay. If you check this every day hoping to find something, get a life. If you check every week, my apologies.

Anyway I have been trying to run but lately it has only been about once a week. There is a dirt lot beside me where more apartments will eventually go and luckily since I can't run on concrete. I have been trying to run before work but either it is to wet to run, or I was up too late the night before. Now if only there was a mountain bike trail near by.

I will write soon. Not quite what to make of this movie. I can tell it was definitly from a story and not an original screenplay by the subplots with the lesbians. But another thing is that I have read some reviews by Evangelicals saying that the story is hostile to Christians because of the deitic beliefs of the dictatorship. But I wonder if Christians will ever see a plot as being hostile to Pharisees instead of true Christians. Jesus was hostile toward Phariseed more than any other group. Do we even recognize what a modern day Pharisee would be? And if art paints these people as Jesus would, would we acknowledge that.

Second "Inside Man" Great plot. Good acting. Need to see it again to get everything clear.

Third "Slither" Fun movie. It is like a cross between Tremors and Alien. Go see it if you laugh at unrealistic gore.

Also went to see a band that I predict will be very popular on the concert, festival, and independent music. Mutemath is a great band. I am still trying to wrap my head around the music but it very well done. They are Christians but will not have anything to do with the Christian music industry. They are passoniate without reservation. I have always compared them to The Flaming Lips in they way they love making music and the style of their music. In some way the remind of the story in the Bible where David gave thanks to God by dancing naked for days. This reckless passion for God. Go see them. Especially with Switchfoot or on the Van's warped tour. Rock out baby.

Finally website of the day. MPR

Wasteland

Well it has been about a month since I last updated. Again nothing reall much going on here. Just of little things.

I guess there has been an upset at the Academy awards with Crash beating Brokeback Mountain. Honestly I think it deserved it. While I think Brokeback was a great film, I think that Crash was done right. But then again I am always a fan of movies with multiple story lines and intersecting plots like Magnolia. In Brokeback, the characters were extraoridnary, not usual people who we can't relate to. In Crash, I think we can relate to the characters in some aspect. I think even the best of us rely on stereotypes in some aspect, usually out of fear. We find out someone is a Muslim, and uknownly and unfairly we associate them with the terrorists. Why? Because we know that most terrorists are Muslims and all we know about the person is that he is Muslim. As humans, fear is built in to us. And when we don't have anything else to go on, we rely on fear.

I almost bought a kayak this week on ebay. I find that it is hard to come upon kayaks that are make for the big guy. I have been wanting to buy a kayak for about 7 years but kayaks and the necessary acessories are expensive. The good thing is that they last forever. On of my most memorable vacations was kayaking the Apostle Islands in wisconsin. Nothing like riding the waves with your life supporting supplies with you, camping on the edge of a Great Lake with no way to get to it except by boat.

One thing I have noticed is the rise of the "Crunchy Conservatives" basically kind of morally conservative version of the 70s hippies. They are usually Christians who live off the land, home school most of the time, are not big fans of big business. I would have to say that I kind of find the idea attractive. Growing up on a farm I appreciate growing your fresh food. In fact I think that people in general need to be more materially self sufficiant. In fact I would dream of having a farm where I can grow my own food and share with my friends. Plus I would have windmills and solar panels. I think if we work for material needs instead of buying them, we are more responsible and less wasteful. Plus I use Linux vs. Windows, don't like Walmart, and I believe that greed is by far the most overlooked vice by Christians in america.
The one thing that bothers me about the Crunchy Cons is that they tend to isolate themselves socially. The whole home school thing is not something I am a fan of because I believe that my kids should be challenged spiritually and learn how to deal with temptations. Even adult Christians isolate themselves too much or they put on a face. We need to learn how to build real relationships with people who don't share our faith. Jesus didn't isolate himself. He was very much in the culture but not part of the culture.

Finally website of the day.

Venting

Got a lot of little things on my mind.

First I always that I am never satisfied with my life. Which I think isn't a bad find. Satisfaction to me means to settle, like everything is perfect. But there are times that I am pleased with my life. These are times that I know things improving: relationships are growing, finances are getting better, I am growing closer to God, old temptations are no more and I can see the deeper sins in my life. Satisfaction means the race is over. I am pleased when I know I am in the race. But there are times when I feel like I am going nowhere. I am not satisfied, but I feel like I can't run. I think that is how I feel now. I have reached a stagnant point, like I am stuck in mud. And at some point, God will pull me out. At some point.

On a more social note, it was nice to see George Bush support ethanol in his State of the Union speech. Plus commercials using Kermit as the mascot for ethanol vehicles. Do I think the current situation is the answer? No. Eventually we will have to go to cellulosic ethanol. It may be more expensive, but when its time comes, when oil is even more expensive and corn ethanol is expensive because of the demand for corn, it will come. But also we will need ethanol to hydrogen converters in our cars to use fuel cells. Because we can only grow so much cellulose, we need to go with fuel cells since there are about twice as effecient. Then come natural gas. That will run out to. We need biomass gasification to take that place. Then there is wind mills, the fastes growing renewable energy, and solar panels on houses. All of these on the current electric grid. But becasue this is all spread out, it put less of a demand on the grid and in fact the flow of electricity on the lines will depend on the weather.
Why do we need to do this? Because God told us to make use of the earth not abuse it. And if we care more about doing God's will than making a profit, the faster this will happen.

What else? I don't know. But I need to get rid of this cold and get to exercising. My goal for the next 30 days is to be able to run 2 miles at a 10 minute mile pace, do 3 full sets of 315 on the squat, and do 3 full set of 150 lbs on the dumbbell press. Adventure race here I come.

Brokeback Mountain

First let me say a few short things.

Unless being gay means that homosexual sex is the most important thing to you, this is not a pro-gay movie. And if you are a homophobe, I would recommend that you watch this movie.

That being said let me explain. I once read that Annie Proulx once wrote that "Brokeback is about manipulation". I am still trying to verify that. But it seems to very much fit. Before we get to that let me get to the quality of the film. All the attention the movie is getting is about 80% merit and about 20% hype. The movie is beautifully filmed and does a great job of displaying what is going on in the characters. Which is important when one realized that this story is more than about two guys who love each other but can't. In fact the movie is as much about Ennis (Heath Ledger) relationship with his wife Alma (Michelle Williams) as much as it is about Ennis's relationship with Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal). Most of you know the story about gay part of the movie. At least physically. But viewing the move the relationship between Jack and Ennis is more about lust and nostalgia. They never really commit to each other and Jack pursues other homosexual desires throughout the story. In fact while being married to woman, Jack pursue Ennis, finds a gay prostitute in Mexico, and starts a relationship with a married man. In fact in viewing the relationship, it almost seems that the relationship is more of molester and molestee.

But the greatest sense of love in this movie is Alma's love for Ennis. Even after she learns of the affair, she still stick with Ennis. And even when the relationship is strained to divorce she still shows concern for him, inviting him over for thanksgiving and worrying about his loneliness. And through all of this, Ennis still loves his family but all of his other relationships with women fail.

Jack on the other hand, puts up a facade. Having a family but ready to jump on opportunities to leave when he gets the chance. Where as Jack will give up what he has for Ennis or somebody else, Ennis won't.

But one can also see how the histories of Jack and Ennis caused the relationship. Jack never felt loved by his dad and Ennis never really had a mom or dad. And it is this gap in their lives that caused the relationship. These aren't evil people, just confused. Their life was by choice but their choice was molded by history and, maybe, genes. But this choice had negative repercussions. One has to ask if Jack and Ennis didn't have this affair, how much better not only their lives and the lives of everyone they loved would have been.

Life in the Slow Lane

Two weeks in to the new year. Things are slowing done thank goodness and the lines that God has allowed me to drawn in my life are in place. Now I just need his help coloring in the lines. That is what is important. As I struggle with the colors I want to use but I don't have. As I try to stay in the lines. And so it goes.

That is about it. I will now leave with this paraphrase.

"God is doing a lot of great things in my life. To sum it up, 280lbs and 28.8% body fat. In other words if I had no fat, I would weigh 200lbs. 15% fat would bet 235lbs. 20% would be 250lbs. So I need to loose 30lbs. to be healthy. Throw into the mix that I want to do an off road triathalon in September. This would involve a 1.5 mile kayak, 11.5 mile mountain bike, and a 6 mile trail run. I am really worried about the trail run. I have never run more than 2.5 miles in my life. But hey I have got 9 months to train. I hope that it is enough.

In other news I am getting emerging church hunger pains again. On one hand I get excited because I believe that this is hunger that God has given me for some reason and I know what kind of impact doing "church" this way can do and I believe that this is more like the church in the New Testament. On the other hand I get more discourged because I want to do something about it but no doors have opened for me. Doors have opened for me in the past, but I was too naive to do something about it. And I still pay the price with regret. Where I am at I feel alone with this idea. I live in the SBC ghetto, and I have no way to connect with others in this area locally. Oh well.

Here is an interesting article about the cable ala carte controversy. There was always the saying with censorship that allowing others to make public what we don't like insures that we have the freedom to make public what we want. Well this article demonstrates how be careful for what you ask for because you just might get it.

And here is my website of the week. He has my vote.

New Years Eve

Well it is New Years Eve and I am sitting in my living room drinking tea with cream. I am actually glad the holidays are over with. I have been here in Tennessee/Kentucky for about 3.5 months and for once I have a wide open schedule. No plans for weekends. Nothing on my schedule. I now have room for a routine. I usually find that if I have regular schedule, I can usually get things done and commit to goals. I need to start getting a social life here, being involved in the Church, working out and hopefully get in shape for an offroad triathelon, and hopefully get some reading in. This while of course catching my favorite TV shows. I will also hope to update my blog once a week, hopefully see more dots on my map as well.

In other news, I saw the Narnia movie. I enjoyed it very much and was impressed with how well they adapted the book. It wasn't overtly religous but still fully spiritual. If there is one thing, I would say it was using Liam Nesson as Aslan's voice. To me, it seemed to be Liam Nesson, not Jesus. I would have picked someone more unknown and with a more something voice.
But another interesting note that I read was that Mr. Lewis never intended this to be an allegory for Jesus's time on earth. Instead his intent was to create a parallel universe and describe how God would interact in that universe. It is like CS is recording the gospel of Narnia. In a sense it shows how little the Church knows about God. Not that that is a unusual thing, it is just shows how big God is and how much human ego and pride gets in the way in our understanding of God. If we all wrote about how God would interact with a new creation, we would all write something different because we all see God differently. Some may be just our different prespectives, but some things maybe just wrong in our perceptions of him. And we all have perceptions of God that are wrong. But we are all human. Understanding God is not a private thing. If we all worked on the story togther and learn from each other. Our relationship with God is supposed to be personal but also communal, not private.

In other news, here is the link of the day.
Happynews

Update

Well just kind updating here. First. I saw Syriana the other night. Just as Traffic was about drugs and Crash was about racism, so Syriana was about oil. But the difference is that while drugs and racism are definitly not good things, oil on the other hand is in itself not a bad thing. Now this might be surprising to those of you who know my career in the ethanol industry. But good things can from oil in the short term while it should be phased out, rather than waiting for it to runout. But the real evil in Syriana is power. And it is very tempting because it can be justified when you think you are doing the right thing.

I won't spoil the movie, but in reflection the greater good that is God presents to us may not make since in ends but the means must be pursued. It is greater than the good for the country, for the environment, and for our selves. What if Saudia Arabia made a decision that was good for the poor of the country, but was detrimental to the US economy. Would the US be willing to sacrifice it's own material success in order to to help out the underpreviliged in the rest of the world? Would us as Christians be willing to make that choice not only in our own lives but also in how we believe the government should act. A man once said that charity is not being a dog with two bones and giving the other dog one. Charity is having one bone and giving it to the other dog.

What is the answer to the issues pointed out in Syriana. I don't know. But maybe the issues wouldn't be there to begin with if we weren't concerned about what have and looking out for number one.

In other news, here is a great review by a friend of mine Narnia Review

Lastly have a great Christmas and don't spend too much money.

Walk the Line. Where are the chrisitians

I am watching a special on Walk the Line, the biopic coming out on one of my personal heros, Johnny Cash. Just by looking at the clips, I can tell this will be a very powerful movie. As one who has followed Cash since he started doing albums with Rick Rubin, I will say that there is no other person who is a better testimony to Jesus. This is a man who is respected by almost everybody and is honest about his relationship with God.

Then it occured to me that here is all of this church publicity and marketing with the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. There are prescreenings for pastors and free passes, and Probably some bible studies with it as well. But as I watch the Cash clips, it occurs to me that Walk the Line will better show people God than C.S. Lewis's movie. And I think the Mr. Lewis would agree.

Cash's life was changed by God through his wife June. And he was a real person. He story show God working now and what the relationship can do. While the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe has some great theological allegories, it lack the testimonial impact of actually seeing someone's whole life being transformed. And if I was going to tell someone to see a movie with and then talk with them about it, well I would have to pick Walk the Line.

I have awakend from my slumber

Back Again

Hello everybody. As most of you know I am in Tennesse now instead of California thank goodness. Now they say they God works in mysterious ways. Well thankfully through various moving bonuses, I was able to pay off most of the debt I had accumulated from my term of employment. That is until I had to get a new vehicle. But luckily I am making enough where I can pay things off in a short time.

Luckily my new surrounding is more than I could have asked for a few years ago. I am making more money, doing more what I want to do career wise, more with "my kind" (midwest folk) and closer to friends and family.

Despite all of this, I do miss Minnesota and my friends there. Here I feel more materially better off, but I feel my live has less worth in that my life is more shallow.

One thing I struggle with this is my singleness and my desire to recreate what it means to be a church. I feel like the things I want do to in life I can't do with just the support of friends. I need somebody who understands me better from the outside in. But yet I don't want to settle for just anybody. Which leads to my desire to be part of the emerging church. When all of your friends and family is more aligned with the Institutional church (IC), it makes it hard to find somebody who understands my take on being a follower of God. In fact that last two women I have tried to date, listed religous differences as there main reason not to date me. Now I could compromise myself, but being part of the postmodern Christian community has almost become my amateur profession and to give it up would almost be denying what God has planned for me. So if any you know any single, somewhat active women who are between 25 and 32, please have them take this test,

http://quizfarm.com/test.php?q_id=43870

If they come up as postmodern/emergent, give them my email, I would like to talk to them.

In other news, I am finally settled in as I have an apartment for 6 months so I almost have a normal life. I am looking to be creative in how I give money. I have already given to world vision, salvation army, and other places.

One idea I have is to set up a nonprofit mutual fund sight. In that each person picks from several charitable sources and what fraction of their monthly giving goes to each one. Then say someone gives $300 a month to charities. one half to local church, one fourth to NPR, and on fourth to Salvation army, then every month $150 dollars would automatically go to the church, 75$ to NPR, and $75 to Salvation Army. All of this would be done through automatic withdrawl from the checking account, the ratio and organizations can be changed when ever as well as the dollar amount. Also special gifts can be done. Now one would probably want to give to the local church in the old fashion way in that giving to the God is in itself an act of worship and maybe part of the worship experience it self. So if anybody has any idea on how to do this on a website, email me. I have some more details that might make it work.

That is it for now.

Does this surprise anybody?

You scored as Emergent/Postmodern. You are Emergent/Postmodern in your theology. You feel alienated from older forms of church, you don't think they connect to modern culture very well. No one knows the whole truth about God, and we have much to learn from each other, and so learning takes place in dialogue. Evangelism should take place in relationships rather than through crusades and altar-calls. People are interested in spirituality and want to ask questions, so the church should help them to do this.

More thoughts

Well I don't know what to make of my situation here yet. The politics with getting an assitant is interesting, but I will you spare you the details. I am not sure what the situation is but it is still up in the air. I don't know how they expect me to do the job unless I get someone to do the day to day duties.

On another note, I got a free year membership to a nice health club that had it's grand opening this weekend. I am in my worst shape since my first year in college so I figure I need to drop about 40 lbs to get back into shape.

Also now that I am making money, I have been thinking about how donate my alloteted amount each month. For one since I haven't really committed my self to a ministry here, I don't where to give here yet. But one thing I did find is World Vision. World Vision is a Christian relief organization that supported as part of the One campaign and is also given kudo by Coldplay. Well as I was exploring the website, there is a subministry that give microloans. In essence, what they do is give small loans to third world people to start businesses and the loans are then repaid over time. Many people complain that giving money or material goods away to somebody will not help so they just don't give at all. But I think this is a great idea. It is very much like Habitat for Humanity where it gives a hand up not a hand out. In a way you are investing in companies but not for financial gain, but for moral benefit. So I will probably start giving to this in some fashion along with the Ooze, a ministry that has slowly helped revolutionize how Chrisitians act as a community.

Also I had a revelation while listening to Coldplays new album. As I was listening to "Speed of Sound", it occured to me that musically it was a typical Coldplay song. But if you listen to the lyrics, it is a very beatiful song about creation on so many levels. I can see it used in a video that starts with a scen from Joan of Arcadia that goes like this.
Joan: If you are God show me a miracle.
God: Allright here it is.
Joan: That is just a tree.
God: Let me see you do it.

Finally I bought two books this week. Pocket Guide to the Apocolypse, which is very sarcastic and funny especially if you are tired of Left Behind. And Summond to Lead b y Leonard Sweet.

That is it. Till next time.

Oh wait. Here is a site that combines my two favorite things, Muppets and movies.

WelI l I have offically been in california now for about 2 weeks. So far the job is still etchy. Alot of it depends on if I get a full time assitant. If I can get one, then I can do more engineering and process improvement stuff. If not I will be doing more lab stuff and I will be itching to find a job with more engineering elsewhere.

On the plus side, I attended the church here that I have been looking at for the second time and I talked to the new head pastor who had just got here 2 weeks ago as well. He chose the church because he too was interested in the emerging church. So he wants to meet for a beer some time and talk some more. Way cool.

Other than that I have mainly working on my laptop try to Ubuntu Linux to work and learning alot abouthow linux works as a program and a community. I see parallels here between Linux and the church as God intended.

I have also seen Crash at the movies. It is to racism what Traffic is to drugs. A very good movie. I also saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Good date movie if your woman likes violence. But not worth 8.50.

That is it for now.

So anyway I have now driven about 2.5 days and I am right now in southwestern Utah in a town called bevear watching the finales of Lost and Alias. This will probably be the last tv I watch for a while in that I am forgoing tv this summer. The only thing I haven't figured out is the numbers. As far as I know that is the only supernatural thing about the show are the numbers. So far we have a bunch child stealing pirates that are the remanants of a slave trading ship called the Black Rock. The island is one big mechanical device with a mechanical monster as its guardian and a hatch that leads very deep. What the numbers have to do with it I don't know.

Anyway this is what I have learned on my trip so far.
1. Trucks are weird. I got an engine light and my mileage went up 3 gpm which I think was caused by hose disconnecting.
2. There is a lot of ranch land in Utah. The problem I don't see many cows on them. In fact the eastern half of Utah is just one big ranch. I feel sorry for the people that had to build the fence.
3.Humans haven't screwed up God's earth in places where humans have no need for it.
4. Laptops are very useful.

More later

Few more observation

5. No matter where you go, you can't avoid the far reacing hands of top 40, country, or CCM radio. But luckily that applied to NPR as well.

Testing

Testing 123
